Society for Free Radical Research International

Welcome Address

Dear Colleagues

I am delighted on behalf of SFRR-Europe to invite you to attend the 16th SFRR-International Conference in London from the 5 - 9 September 2012. The international SFRRI conference will be preceded by four satellite meetings on Wednesday 5 September 2012. The conference will be held just after the Olympics at Imperial College London in South Kensington and is within walking distance of the National History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Albert Concert Hall and Hyde Park.

In the past, our biennial SFRRI Conferences have attracted between 550-800 scientists, researchers and clinicians interested in free radical research. Such international conferences provide a multidisciplinary forum for delegates to gain an up-to-date overview of advances in the field.

The format of SFRRI in London 2012 will include plenary lectures from Prof. Lester Packer (Trevor Slater Award), Prof. Kelvin Davies (SFRR Europe Award), Prof. Kathy Griendling (Informa Award), Prof. Dame Linda Partridge, FRS (IUBMB Jubilee Lecture), as well as, Catherine Pasquier and Hermann Esterbauer lectures given by early career investigators. Satellite meetings will be held as part of the SFRRI conference on Wednesday, 5 September. In the HNE Club Satellite Meeting, keynote lectures will be given by Prof. Harry Ischiropoulos, Prof. Henry Forman, Prof. Dennis Petersen and Prof. Shlomo Sasson. Two other Satellite Meetings will focus on 'Genetics and Epigenetics of Frailty and Ageing' and 'Protein Oxidation and Modification'. The fourth Satellite Meeting is being run by Anthony Newman (Elsevier) and Pernille Hammelsoe (Wiley-Blackwell) and will focus on ‘How to Write a Paper and Get it Published in a Good Journal’.

Sixteen state-of-the art research symposia were selected by an International Scientific Programme Committee and Advisory Board. These symposia are scheduled for the morning sessions on Thursday, 6 September – Sunday, 9 September, with afternoon sessions dedicated to oral presentations of selected abstracts in themed parallel sessions. Importantly, significant time will be allocated for poster presentations during ‘working lunches’ and late afternoon interactive sessions accompanied by a ‘drinks reception’. Elsevier in collaboration with other publishers are also organising a Workshop for authors interested in publishing in English language journals.

We are delighted to have ensured a low registration fee (£195) for early career investigators. Established members affiliated with SFRRI and other SFRR societies, including the Oxygen Club of California and The Biochemical Society, will be eligible for a reduced members’ registration fee (£440) to attend all Satellite Meetings and the SFRRI 2012 Conference.

On behalf of SFRR-Europe, I look forward to welcoming you at SFRRI 2012 in London. We hope that this conference will provide delegates from all countries with an opportunity for valuable scientific discussions, initiating new research links and friendships as well as enjoying the culture of London’s numerous museums, galleries and theatres! Importantly, accompanying delegates will be offered a varied programme for visiting historical sites in London.

In advance of the conference, I gratefully acknowledge the major financial support received from the Society for Free Radical Biology & Medicine, Oxygen Club of California, SFRR International, SFRR Europe, The Biochemical Society, SFRR Asia, Seahorse Biosciences, Kyowa Hakko USA, and Mars Symbioscience. I would like to also thank Fiona Hutt and her colleagues at Elsevier in Oxford for their excellent organisation of the conference.

Giovanni E. Mann,
