Professor Christine Winterbourn is Director of the Free Radical Research Group in the Pathology Department, University of Otago, Christchurch and co-ordinator of the University of Otago Oxidative Stress Research Theme. She is an Auckland University chemistry graduate who received her PhD in biochemistry from Massey University and did postdoctoral work at the University of British Columbia, Canada before returning to New Zealand. Her current interests include the biochemistry of superoxide radicals and the role of superoxide dismutase in antioxidant defence; the reactive oxidants produced by the neutrophil enzyme myeloperoxidase and their role in microbial killing and inflammation; thiol proteins in antioxidant defence and redox regulation; and the biochemistry and cellular function of peroxiredoxins. She has published over 250 papers on these topics. Professor Winterbourn has received the NZ Association of Scientists’ Marsden Medal, Massey University 75th Anniversary Medal, Society for Free Radical Research (Australasia) Distinguished Service Award, University of Otago Distinguished Research Medal and Society for Free Radical Research (International) Trevor Slater Award. She is an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit.
