Symposium Speaker

Eddie Weitzberg

Eddie WeitzbergDr Weitzberg received his medical degree from Uppsala University in 1982 and his PhD in 1993, based on studies on endothelin and nitric oxide (NO) in sepsis. He has been a full professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care since 2003 and has published more than 150 scientific articles. Dr Weitzbergs research interest is presently focused on the mammalian nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, which he and collaborators discovered in 1994. This pathway complements the canonical l-arginine-NOsynthase pathway. Research is focused on the cardiovascular and metabolic role of inorganic nitrate and nitrite in normal physiology as well as in different pathophysiological conditions. The present research activities also have important dietary implications since inorganic nitrate is a part of our daily diet.
