Dr. Valerie Vanhooren graduated as a Master in Biotechnology in 2005 and started as a PhD student in the Mouse Genetics in Inflammation group in the Department for Molecular Biomedical Research at Ghent University, Belgium.
She finished her PhD in Biotechnology in 2009 on the N-glycomics of mammalian aging. After receiving a grant from the Special Research Fund (BOF) of the University of Ghent, she became a postdoc in the same lab of Prof. Claude Libert, were she is coordinating the aging project. Within a collaboration framework, she has been conducting a post-doctoral stay since April 2012 in the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), in the Metabolic Engineering and Diabetes Therapy group of Prof. Joan J. Guinovart in Barcelona, Spain.
She is a full member of the ongoing European COST Action CM1001 on Chemistry of non-enzymatic protein modification, and a participant in a number of national and international networks focusing on aging research, such as FP7 MARK-AGE.
Her major lines of research interest are 1) influence of sugar metabolism on aging in mice and humans, 2) inflammaging, and 3) molecular biology of ageing and age-related diseases.
