Darley-Usmar is presently Professor of Pathology and Director of the Center for Free Radical Biology at UAB. He was trained as biochemist at the University of Essex in England and then moved to the University of Oregon to pursue his interests in the structure and function of mitochondrial proteins in human disease. After a period as a lecturer in Japan and a Research Scientist at the Wellcome Research Foundation in London he joined UAB to establish his own research group in the Department of Pathology.
Research Interests:
His major research interests are in mitochondriology and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species with the aim of understanding the mechanisms of cell death in cardiovascular disease. The focus of his laboratory is to understand how cells use signal transduction pathways to adapt to stress. He is particularly interested in how the interaction of mitochondria with NO can modulate cell signaling and how this changes in response to inflammation. The group uses a wide variety of techniques to approach these problems including cell signaling, molecular biology and proteomics.
