Brigitte Winklhofer-Roob, MD, is head of the Human Nutrition & Metabolism Research and Training Center (HNMRC), Institute of Molecular Biosciences, Karl Franzens University of Graz, Austria since 2005. She was appointed Associate Professor of Pediatrics in 1997, Professor of Human Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition in 2005, and tenured Associate Professor in 2008.
She has been and currently is principal investigator of large collaborative EU projects of FP5 (VITAGE), FP6 (PREDICTIONS) and FP7 (BIOCLAIMS), and coordinator of Erasmus Intensive Programs COSPI (2006-2009) and TOOLTIPS (2009-2012). She received several awards for excellence in antioxidant research, including the Hermes Vitamin Research Award and the International Milupa Award. She served as Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition 2006-2011, member of expert groups (e.g., ILSI Europe) and scientific advisory boards and expert evaluator and reviewer for the European Commission.
Her research interests focus on natural antioxidants and biomarkers of nutritional exposure and oxidative and glycoxidative stress in chronic low-grade inflammation (including obesity and impaired renal function) with the goal of characterizing the effects of bioactive compounds, defining individual requirements and developing novel preventive strategies for healthy aging and therapeutic concepts for degenerative diseases.
