Rafael Radi

Rafael RadiRafael Radi, MD, Ph.D. graduated from the Universidad de la República, Uruguay, in 1988 and 1991 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA from 1989 to 1992, where he worked with Bruce A. Freeman and Joe S. Beckman. Radi is a tenured faculty at the Department of Biochemistry, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de la República where currently holds the position of Full Professor and Chairman; he is also Director of the Center for Free Radical and Biomedical Research. He holds appointments as Honorary Professor of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Adjunct Professor of the Universities of Alabama at Birmingham, Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt University (USA). In the last decade he was a Howard Hughes International Research Scholar, and received the Alexander Von Humboldt Award in 2010 and the Discovery Award of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine in 2011.

Radi has extensively characterized the biological chemistry of peroxynitrite, its role in mitochondrial dysfunction and in disease states and its potential as a therapeutic target. Additionally, he works in the redox cross talk during microbial invasion to mammalian cells and the characterization of microbial antioxidant networks as virulence factors.
