Dr. Leocadio Rodríguez Mañas (MD, PhD) is the Head of the Department of Geriatrics at Hospital Universitario de Getafe (Madrid), President of the Research Committee at Hospital Universitario de Getafe and Professor “ad honorem” of the Department of Medicine (School of Medicine, Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). He is the past Director of the Foundation for Biomedical Research at the Hospital Universitario de Getafe. He is the co-ordinator of the Spanish Collaborative Research Network on Aging and Frailty – RETICEF (Ministry of Science and Innovation), Co-director of the epidemiologic study ‘Toledo Study on Healthy Ageing’ that is being carried out on 2.495 community-dwelling elderly people, a founding member and President of the Academia Latinoamericana de Medicina del Adulto Mayor (ALMA), member of the European Academy for Medicine of Aging and Secretary of the Special Group of Interest in Diabetes of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society.
He is also involved in drafting Guidelines and Statement Position Documents on Diabetes in older people. He is a member of Evaluating Committees of several Spanish public research organisms. Advisor of the PAHO (WHO) in topics related to Health in Old Age. Member of the Committee of the Global Initiative for Old People with Diabetes (EASD-IAGG-AMDA). He is a Principal Investigator in 26 research projects sponsored by public agencies and industry. At the present time he is the Principal Investigator in two European Projects, one of them (FOD-CC) aimed to find a clinical definition of frailty, while the other one is a two-stage project (MID-FRAIL) aimed at examining the efficacy of a multimodal intervention in prefrail/frail older patients with type 2 diabetes to prevent the development of further frailty or disability.
Research background and expertise: clinical investigation in human vascular (endothelial) ageing, mechanisms of vascular damage in diabetes and frailty, role of diabetes and vascular function in clinical frailty. He has published more than 110 original manuscripts in peer reviewed journals and is author of 54 books and book chapters, including chapters in one of the most renowned books on diabetes in older people (Diabetes in Old Age; Ed. AJ Sinclair) and one of the classical books of Geriatric Medicine (Pathy´s Textbook of Geriatric Medicine).
