Graduated in Medicine in 1978, with additional 3-year residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiology by the University of São Paulo School of Medicine and the Heart Institute from same institution. From 1982-84, worked as assistant staff physician at the same institution. Underwent post-doctoral training at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, USA (under Dr. Robert E. Gosdstein) from 1984-87. Obtained PhD degree in 1992 at the University of São Paulo (supervisor Dr. Protásio L. da Luz). Since 1987, was enrolled as assistant and (after 1996) associate professor in positions related to experimental and translational research at the Heart Institute, University of São Paulo School of Medicine. Since 2000, is the head of the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the same institution. Main research interest is centered on redox vascular biology, including influence of hemodynamic forces in vascular oxidant generation, redox pathophysiology of vascular response to injury and aortic valve calcification and improved methods to assess the production of reactive oxygen species in vascular tissue and cells. More recently, has been involved in understanding mechanisms and implications of the functional association between endoplasmic reticulum oxidoreductase chaperones and NADPH oxidases in several circumstances, including vascular responses to growth factors and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Has authored or co-authored around 90 peer-reviewed publications. Has supervised or supervises 17 doctoral and 11 post-doctoral students, in addition to a number of undergraduates and collaborators. Serves at the Editorial Board of Free Radical Biology and Medicine and Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia, and as a Clinical Investigation Section Editor of the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research. Is a member of the Council of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine, and a member of the coordinating review board of FAPESP research agency and CAPES post-graduating studies federal committee in Brazil. Has served as adhoc reviewer for more than 20 international journals.
