The research is focused on (a) connecting the dynamic profiles of nitric oxide in the brain with its role as a neuromodulator and as the mediator of neurovascular coupling with impact in aging and neurodegeneration; (b) studying plant-derived dietary phenolic compounds, particularly those present in wine, in terms of their impact on nitrite-driven regulatory processes, encompassing the non-enzymatic production of nitric oxide from dietary nitrite in the gastric compartment.
He has been involved in the curricular reforms undertaken at his Faculty of Pharmacy and in the organization and coordination of several National meetings and courses on Free Radical Biology and Medicine.
He has chaired the organizing committees of several international conferences and currently he serves as Secretary General of the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry, member of the editorial board of Free Radical Research and of Oxygen Club California and as council of the European Society for Neurochemistry.
