Paul Holvoet is a Full Professor in Biomedicine at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, where he is directing the Atherosclerosis and Metabolism unit at the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. His research focuses on the interaction between oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of obesity, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. He is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He has published over hundred twenty papers which have been cited more than 5000 times. He is first inventor on international patents on the association of oxidized LDL with cardiovascular diseases; on gene signatures in monocytes linking oxidative stress and inflammation; and on adipose tissue protection by non-caloric sweeteners derived from Stevia.
