Professor Christer Hogstrand (CH) has a B.Sc. in Biology (1985) and a Ph.D. in Zoophysiology (1991) from the University of Göteborg, Sweden. His dissertation was supervised by Dr Carl Haux and focussed on the metal binding protein, metallothionein with particular interest in its role in maintaining metal homeostasis during metal exposure. Having finished his PhD, CH was awarded a Swedish research council fellowship to conduct research with Professor Chris M. Wood at McMaster University, Canada, on zinc and calcium interactions in transporting epithelia. In 1994, CH took a position as Assistant Professor in Biology and Toxicology at the University of Kentucky, USA. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999, but moved to England to become lecturer at King's College London. Here he conducted research on the role of metals in biology, first within the Department of Life Sciences and later within the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division. In 2001, he was promoted to Reader and in 2005 to Professor. He has also held appointment as senior investigator at the University of Miami, USA and the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), Bergen, Norway. Present research is focussed on regulation and function of zinc in health and disease, and also on toxicology of metals, environmental pharmaceuticals and of contaminants commonly found in seafood. CH has been recipient of a continuous stream of Federal/Research Council/European research funding since 1996 and has in addition being sponsored by The Wellcome Trust, other charities and industry. He has co-authored 17 reviews and book chapters and 107 research articles in international journals. CH has been consulted as expert by numerous organisations including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the Intergovernmental Commission for Exploration of the Seas (ICES).
