Prof. Javier Garzón PhD, studied Biology at the University Complutense of Madrid and received his doctoral degree in 1978. He held post-doctoral positions at the Institute of Medicinal Chemistry (Patronato Juan de la Cierva, Madrid) and at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco (UCSF). He joined the Institute of Psychiatry, Max-Plank in Planegg-Martinsried, Munich and was later appointed as a tenure track Researcher at the Cajal Institute (CI) for Neurosciences in Madrid by the Spanish Higher Scientific Research Council (CSIC), a position that he holds to date.
Javier Garzon’s research interests include: cell signalling in the nervous system; cross-regulation between G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and glutamate NMDA receptors; agonist-biased regulation of G proteins and the role of RGS proteins in GPCR function; implications of redox processes and zinc metabolism in GPCR signalling; the opioid and cannabinoid systems in pain control and drug abuse; and NMDAR dysfunction in psychotic and affective disorders.
