Peter M. Eckl is the current chairman of the HNE-Club, a special interest group within SFRR devoted to the study of lipid peroxidation and its role in cell physiology and disease, in particular the role played by the major oxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE). His scientific focus lies on the genotoxicological properties of HNE and other oxidation products including that of β-carotene in primary cells of different origin such as hepatocytes , pneumocytes, astrocytes and endothelial cells, and the mechanisms by which HNE contributes at the molecular level to the signaling pathways leading to apoptosis and/or necrosis. Within this scenario special attention is given to ferritin and iron as mediators of the apoptotic pathway.
Peter M. Eckl is affiliated to the University of Salzburg, Austria, where he is heading the Division of Genetics within the Department of Cell Biology.
