Brian J. Day graduated with a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Montana, Missoula, MT, USA in 1984. He worked as a pharmacist for 3 years before going back to graduate school at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA where he obtained his PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1992. He went to Duke University, Durham, NC, USA for post-doctoral training in pulmonary toxicology and finished in 1995.
He has been at National Jewish Health, Denver, CO, USA since 1997 where he is a Vice Chair and Professor of Medicine. Dr. Day has authored over a 100 original scientific publications and is an active member of a number of scientific societies including the Society for Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine where he currently serves on council and is a co-chair of the Free Radical School. He is on the editorial board of Biochemical Pharmacology and was a member of the NIH Lung Injury, Repair and Remodeling Study Section from 2005 to 2009. He is a consultant and was appointed Chief Scientific Officer of Aeolus Pharmaceuticals in September 2004. Since 1994 he has helped guide the design and synthesis of metalloporphyrins and has discovered a number of their novel activities in biological systems. He is one of the scientific co-founders of Aeolus Pharmaceuticals and an inventor on a majority of the catalytic antioxidant program’s patents.
His research interests focus on antioxidant drug discovery and the role of antioxidant defenses in aging and disease.
