Dr. Brookes received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1997, on the subject of mitochondrial uncoupling. After a short spell at the Institute of Neurology in London, he continued post-doctoral training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, studying mitochondria in cardiac hypertrophy. Since moving to Rochester NY in 2003, his research has focused on mitochondrial function in cardiac ischemic preconditioning. He is currently Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, and studies mitochondrial potassium channels, the SIRT family of lysine deacetylases, and NO derived nitro-lipids. The overall goal of his research program is to develop novel drugs to protect the heart from ischemic injury.
