Alberto Boveris is Emeritus Professor of Physical Biochemistry in the School of Pharmacy & Biochemistry of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires.
He was President of SFRRI in 2000-2002 and is member of Science and Medicine Academies in Argentina, Brasil, Venezuela, Spain and Italy. Professor Boveris is an expert in mitochondrial bioenergetics and his work with Britton Chance in the 1970s described mitochondrial production of hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radicals. Chance, Sies and Boveris integrated mitochondrial and peroxisomal function in the classic review "Hydroperoxide metabolism in mammalian organs" (Physiol Rev 59: 527-605 (1979). Alberto Boveris and Britton Chance also developed organ chemiluminescence as a non-invasive and non-destructive assay for measurement of oxygen radical reactions in animal organs (PNAS 77: 347-351 (1980). Professor Boveris current interests are mitochondrial nitric oxide (mtNOS) function; mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and neurodegenerative diseases; and the acceleration of hydroperoxide metabolism (oxidative stress) in pathophysiological conditions. He has published more than 250 journal papers, more than 50 chapters in reference books and his Hirsch index is 58.
