Osamu Handa is Assistant Professor of Department of Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine. He received his MD from Yamaguchi University, Japan in 1994, and obtained his PhD in gastroenterology from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Graduate School of Medical Science in 2003. He is a vice-chair of international Scientific Program Committee of SFRRI-2014 in Kyoto, and a Board Member of SFRR-Japan, in which he also serves as a member of General Affair.
He is an Editor of BioMed Research International, an Editorial Board Member of several journals such as Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Research, World Journal of Pharmacology, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Inflammation Research, Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, and Biochemical Pharmacology. He obtained SFRR Japan Young Investigator Award in 2nd SFRR-Asia in 2005, the SFRR JAPAN Award for Young Scientists in 2005, Young Investigators Award in 4th Joint meeting of SFRR Australasia and Japan in 2007, and SFRR Japan Award of Scientific Excellence in 2013.
His research interests focus on the role of oxidative stress on the signal transduction in gastro-intestinal epithelium. He has been working on the role of oxidative stress on Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric carcinogenensis. Recently, he is exploring the role of oxidative stress on the leakiness of gastrointestinal epithelial cells.
